Summer fruitlet thinning enhanced quality attributes of Ambrosia™ apple at harvest and after four months of cold air storage

Summer fruitlet thinning is implemented as a routine orchard practice to produce apple fruits with good quality. However, its impacts on the dynamics of fruit quality metrics during growing season and in postharvest storage, remain unclear. In this study, summer hand fruitlets Ambrosia™ (Malus x domestica Borkh.) was conducted two dwarfing rootstocks, Malling 9 (M.9) Budagovsky (B.9), an organic conventional under semi-arid climate Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Adequate (“AT”, which 70% were removed) light (“LT”, 30% randomized plots eight weeks after full bloom. Fruit development dry matter content (DMC) then monitored season; subsequently evaluated at harvest four-month air storage 0.5 °C. Relative LT, AT enhanced attributes DMC, surface blush coverage intensity, soluble solids harvest. The apples higher DMC also possessed compositional lower disorders stage, This study suggests that can have significant composition subsequent on-tree development, onset ripening eventually retention minimization over 4 months cold storage. effect found for OG CV production systems both rootstocks
